That family grows to include three biological and two adopted children, and it’s the driving force behind Jake and Neytiri’s decision to exile themselves after the RDA return to resume their plundering, led by the practically non-existent General Ardmore . These early scenes deliver a lot of exposition, and breeze over important details about the status quo and the nature of certain relationships.

But “Annabelle Comes Home” proves it’s perhaps time to put the genie back in its bottle and bring this particular creepy doll series to a decisive close. Annabelle Comes Home takes the classic horror trope of Teenage Babysitters in Predicaments, and ups the ante by placing them in Ed and Lorraine Warrens’ house full of haunted objects. These familiar elements culminate in a fun, refreshing, even heart-warming entry into the Conjuring franchise.

Centered on the writings and experiences of renowned paranormal investigator Ed Warren and his clairvoyant wife Lorraine , the films’ grounding in allegedly real hauntings has been fundamental to their enormous appeal for horror fans. That impressive track record can certainly be attributed in part to the dedicated involvement of producer and originalConjuring director James Wan, who along with Peter Safran has provided consistent creative vision at the rate of almost one release a year since 2013. Once it all ramps up, however, there are some genuinely creative and beautifully shot scares.

Film Credits

From there, the movie is a twisted and terrifying haunted house horror as each of the girls in the house — and Mary Ellen’s suitor Bob — are harrassed by the unleashed entities. Determined to keep Annabelle from wreaking more havoc, paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren lock the possessed doll in the artifacts room in their house. But when the doll awakens the room's evil spirits, it soon becomes an unholy night of terror for the couple's 10-year-old daughter, her friends and their young baby sitter.

Jake is no more interesting a character than he was last time around, but he does have utility here as a tough father figure for his kids to struggle to live up to. Zoe Saldaña’s Neytiri feels like the legacy character with the least to do, mostly advocating for her kids to a distracted Jake. The leaders of the Metkayina tribe, played by Cliff Curtis and Kate Winslet, are cut from a very similar cloth to Jake and Neytiri and often end up feeling redundant as a result.

Another dubious decision ends up sidelining Wilson and Farmiga, who have effectively channeled the Warrens’ devoted personal and professional collaboration over four of the franchise’s films, in favor of focusing on the trio of young women. While they’re a capable group, they just don’t have enough life history to adequately amplify the threats they are facing, leaving superficial fear and piercing screams to substitute for genuine terror. Annabelle Comes Home picks up as the Warrens cautiously transport the doll back to their home in an early scene that reveals the premise for all the mayhem that eventually ensues. After their car breaks down outside a cemetery on a dark, mist-enshrouded country road, Annabelle’s presence in the back seat rouses the dead from their graves. Convinced it’s “a beacon for other spirits,” Lorraine attempts to warn Ed just before he almost gets run down by a semi-trailer.

Storyline

You will come for the brand name, stay for the genre jolts and leave thinking about how this young woman seems genuinely haunted by this experience. That, and just how eerie the simple sight of coins rolling out of the shadows can be. Annabelle Comes Home is not out to reinvent the wheel, or to even rotate the franchise tires. It may not leave you petrified to the core, but it won’t you leave angry, and in this, the Summer of Our Perpetual Disastrous Sequel, that’s no small feat. It is a meat-and-potatoes scarefest, an oddly back-to-basics take on the ghost-story gauntlet run. Compared to the previous films, it’s worth its weight in spare doll parts.

Unexpectedly, Mary Ellen’s friend Daniela shows up on the pretext of joining Judy’s birthday celebration, although she’s really pursuing her own agenda. Still grieving over the recent death of her father in a traffic accident, Daniela has come seeking spiritual reconnection with her dad, convinced that the Warrens’ paranormal expertise can provide guidance. She attempts to interpret their work by sneaking into the locked artifacts room after stealing the key from Ed’s study and proceeds to examine closely and even touch many of the tainted objects stored there for safekeeping. The picture just rehashes the same stuff this series has already done multiple times before.

However, her curiosity once inside, takes over and she ends up touching and interacting with several of the artefacts as well as opening the case that houses the Annabelle doll. Like JUMANJI but instead of monkeys and spiders coming out of the woodwork, it's ancient evils from lore bent of causing as much pain and suffering as humanly possible, the demons that have infested the Warrens' artifact room come barreling out once Annabelle is unleashed. From the moment the sun goes down the final half is a whirlwind of clever and sometimes intense scares that make use of all sorts of props and characters. It’s a carnival of blood, haunting ghouls, deceptively vicious items and even a werewolf. Yes, this entry finally delivers on one nasty beastie with sharp claws that chases one dump boy around the outside of the house. Dauberman orchestrates a dramatic array of supernatural entities to frighten the girls, with the bloody bride perhaps the most threatening, other than the silently menacing Annabelle.

There’s plenty of stuff we’ve seen before but there are some gags, including one dealing with coins, that do pay off in creepy fashion. In large part that lies on Dauberman, who in making his directorial debut here doesn’t quite figure out how to craft an eerie atmosphere that builds up to the inevitable fright night in these early scenes. The majority of the small scares that pop up in between the moments of earnestness amount to not much more than stoic, ghostly figures standing still some feet away, who are there when the camera starts panning but are gone once the view has passed over some kind of cover. There’s even one scare involving an evil bride that feels ripped straight out of THE CONJURING 2 in terms of framing and style and handled much less intensely.

The religious rite seems to immobilize Annabelle for about a year, before an uninvited visitor disrupts the enforced calm of the artifacts room. Things start to go sideways on the evening that the Warrens’ 10-year-old daughter Judy plans to celebrate her birthday early with teen babysitter Mary Ellen while her parents are out of town on a case. “Annabelle Comes Home” is a slight step up thanks to its better realized place within the franchise and closer connection to the two main Conjuring films.

Furthermore, there’s a tenderness here that we don’t see a lot of in movies of this nature. Case in point, a cute little crush between Mary and Bob that doesn’t end in the prerequisite booty call you might be expecting. It’s refreshing to see puppy love displayed in such a tender and sweet-natured way. If you’re already thinking that this sounds like overkill, you are right.

I started Smash Cut in 2014 to share my love of movies and give a perspective I haven't yet seen represented. I'm also an editor at The New York Times, a Rotten Tomatoes-approved critic, and a member of the Online Film Critics Society. It all culminates in one of the worst endings of the whole Conjuring Universe to date. One that has the movie feel like a waste of time and makes characters like the Warrens look like idiots. The film then shifts focus to their young daughter Judy who appears to have the same gift as her mother.

When all else fails, simply have someone pulled violently by unseen forces or add unidentifiable whispering voices. The mothership tales about the real-life Warrens’ misadventures has established itself as a reliable, respectful mash-up of ’70s religio-horror, paranorm-core suburban spookiness, finely tuned atmospherics and impeccably timed shrieks and jump scares. As for the Annabelle franchise side hustles, they act like pulpy beta versions of their more prestigious sister series blessed with a dingy, primal-scare–invoking dolly at center stage. It can, depending on the lighting and camera angle, appear either evil or very evil. These spin-offs sometimes feel like the scary-movie version of the Kuleshov Experiment, in which a portrait of a man staring blankly changes emotional states depending on the shot that follows it. Cut from Annabelle to a bowl of soup, and she seems hungry; cut from her static visage to doors closing of their accord and household items attacking their owners and all manner of chaos, and the scratched-up figurine seems like the choreographer of hell on Earth.

Determined to keep Annabelle from wreaking more havoc, demonologists Ed and Lorraine Warren bring the possessed doll to the locked artifacts room in their home, placing her “safely” behind sacred glass and enlisting a priest’s holy blessing. But an unholy night of horror awaits as Annabelle awakens the evil spirits in the room, who all set their sights on a new target—the Warrens’ ten-year-old daughter, Judy, and her friends. Madison Iseman) and; Daniela , Mary Ellen’s friend who wants to use the mystic air of the Warren’s home, namely their demon room, to make contact with her deceased father – his death she blames on herself. All three actresses turn in solid work and have loving, playful chemistry, but aside from Daniela messing around in the artifact room, where she unlocks the creepy Annabelle, they don’t have much to do except exist the house. There’s a routineness to what they’re doing, whether it’s baking a cake or hanging out in the backyard, that bogs down the movie and begs the question of what is even meant to be going on and when it’s all supposed to happen. These moments can be funny, in fact making it the funniest movie in the series, but I found it easy to forget I was watching a horror movie after a certain point.

Cameron’s environmentalist interests remain the backbone of the larger Avatar plot, and his heavy employment of familiar character archetypes and story devices feels like a clear message that the Na’vi good guys and military baddies are more important as a collective than individually. And if we’re talking archetypal characters, we have to talk about Cameron’s decision to revive Stephen Lang’s Miles Quaritch as The Way of Water’s primary villain. Quaritch’s hyper-macho drill sergeant persona felt dated in 2009, little more than a vessel for all the worst aspects of Avatar’s themes of colonialism, but Lang’s scene-chewing enthusiasm always kept the character interesting. Quaritch gets his second chance at revenge thanks to a Na’vi body of his own, and his newfound physical prowess gives him even more swagger than he already had.

Annabelle Comes Home is one of the weaker entries in the series, but it still delivers some good scares. A worthy addition to the "Conjuring" universe, this is the best of the three "Annabelle" movies because it's an old school horror film modest in scope, yet high on scares and fun. Along with his cinematographer Michael Burgess, Dauberman swiftly utilizes every nook and cranny of the Warren house for maximum spookiness—predictably, the well-choreographed scenes in the artifact room are the film’s strongest. You would think that Annabelle Comes Home, the seventh film in The Conjuring universe and the third Annabelle film, is doomed to fail.

If only the half-baked story could also meet our expectations, or at least match the logic of the previous two “Annabelle” films. Annabelle Comes Home is gifted with what might be the ultimate haunted house set-up. Chuck in the well-worn ‘baby babysitter’ trope, and Annabelle Comes Home should be a Friday night funhouse blast. It wasn’t particularly scary, and there wasn’t anything particularly memorable about the characters.

The most things it failed to do is to keep the viewers' engagement with the characters. Some of these characters is lacking strong qualities of dimention in their traits. It did not deliver the scare factor, and if it did, the execution is not strong enough.

Regular Conjuringverse visitors know that the antique doll resides deep in the Warrens’ basement, a virtual museum of cursed totems and creepy-as-fuck playthings. Casual moviegoers can guess that someone will eventually go down into that basement, ignore the sign that demands no one open the case under any circumstances and rile up the bad-juju inventory. So when the Warrens go out of town for a job and leave their daughter Judy under the care of a teenage neighbor named Mary Ellen , it’s only a matter of time before some curious underage character messes with things they shouldn’t.

Kevin Williamson before him, has a knack for crafting relatable, young characters who you come to care for before they’re tortured by murderous entities. Focusing on the key characters and establishing their goodwill and bonds with each other is very important to the overall integrity of the movie and gives it’s a sense of sweetness that isn't often found in such abundance in these movies. The problem is that all the time spent on building those relationships can’t help but slow the movie down and feel like it’s hopping from moment to moment as the movie everyone involved was envisioning from the get-go waits in the wings and has trouble coming to the surface. (Long story.) Just don’t call it “possessed,” however, if you’re around paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren . “Demons don’t possess things, only people,” they declare, before their car breaks down, late at night, in front of a fogged-in graveyard, right by a grisly car accident.

I love diving into the world of the Warren families' 'room of evil things.' This made me want to see a movie about their daughter Judy, who already sees ghosts. Dauberman also has a great deal of fun with the forbidden room and all its various, monstrous treasures. Little Judy, who seems to have picked up some of her mother's clairvoyance, is having trouble at school because of her parents' work and can't seem to make friends.

Thankfully, director/cowriter Gary Dauberman, a veteran of both the series and things-that-go-bump-in-the-psyche storytelling understands that self-serious is not the name of the game this time. If Annabelle Comes Home is the best of the three films to date — a low-ish bar, but still — it’s because he’s well aware that is simplistic story works best as a cross between a haunted house and a carnival funhouse. A cute boy briefly enters the picture, as does some sort of hellhound creature.

Prom Night ( Revisited – Horror Movie Review

Later, while trying to cheer Judy up and prepare for her upcoming birthday, a friend of Mary Ellen named Daniela arrives. She pretends as though she wants to hang out but is actually more interested in the Warren’s haunted artefact room. Having lost her father in a car crash recently, she is hoping to contact him.
